Hours:

Mon – Fri 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Prairie Diagnostic Services will be implementing a fee adjustment effective June 1, 2026.

Special Information for Microbiology Submissions

Sample preparation fee will apply for submissions to the Microbiology Laboratory that are too large to process in the Microbiology Laboratory. The fees are as follows:

  • Sample that requires trim down for processing in the Microbiology lab (e.g., liver or placenta section submitted to Micro that is too large to process in that lab) – $50.00.
  • Sample that requires tissue collection for Microbiology testing that requires consultation with the pathologist such as collecting samples from a whole piglet or taking a joint swab from a leg – $80.00.

PCR Submissions

PDS is no longer accepting swabs in gel media for PCR testing. Refer to PDS is no longer accepting Gel Swabs for PCR Testing.

A minimum of 5 grams of feces is required for Johne’s PCR testing. Samples under 2 grams will not be processed, the client will be notified, and additional feces must be submitted. Refer to Johne’s Testing at PDS found under Resources->Submission Protocols.

Tritrichomanas samples require a 48-hour incubation at 35OC prior to processing. Please indicate on the submission form if sample was incubated prior to shipping. The test turnaround time does not include the incubation time, please add 2 days to turnaround time if the sample was not incubated before shipping.

When submitting samples for Bacteriology as well as PCR, submit a gel media swab (preferred for culture) as well as a swab that is acceptable for PCR.

If urgent results are required, the submission form must be marked as STAT. Please contact the lab when a STAT sample will be submitted. Short turnaround times cannot be guaranteed, especially for large numbers of samples. STAT samples must arrive in the lab by 10 A.M., overtime charges may apply for samples arriving after 10:00 A.M. STAT testing is not available for all PCR tests – refer to Stat Submissions -> Tests Excluded from STAT Testing.

PCR STAT requests

STAT PCR test options are available for the most requested STAT tests (PRRS, Porcine Corona Panel, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Equine Respiratory Panel, Equine herpesvirus 1 and 4), refer to Test section of PDS Test and Services Guide. Price includes the STAT fee.

For all other PCR STAT requests, the STAT charge is applied as a percentage of the test cost per test ordered. The STAT charge is discounted if multiple samples are submitted.

Example pricing:

  • Sample 1-2 at 150% (e.g., test cost is $50.00, one sample STAT is $75.00)
  • Samples 3-9 at 130% (e.g., test cost is $50.00, 3 samples STAT is $195.00)
  • More than 10 samples at 110% (e.g., test cost is $50.00, 10 samples STAT is $550.00)

Not all PCR tests are available STAT. Refer to STAT Submissions for a list of tests NOT available STAT.

Samples must arrive in the lab by 10 A.M. Additional charges will apply for late arriving samples if overtime is required. Contact PDS to discuss overtime charges prior to submitting late samples for same day testing.

Tests that require bacterial culture and PCR will have longer turnaround times. These samples will be forwarded to the bacteriology section for culture before they can be submitted to the PCR section for testing.

For large submissions of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis (Johne’s disease), and Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD), turnaround times will vary according to the number of samples submitted. Please contact the lab for estimated turnaround times.
