Avian Influenza

Currently several provinces are experiencing Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in wild birds and domestic avian species. PDS is testing samples that may contain HPAI virus. We have procedures in place to ensure biosecurity and biocontainment. However, we want to advice our clients out of abundance of precautions that, if you or your clients deliver submissions to PDS in person, please do not contact avian species before proper biosecurity measures are taken, such as, but not limited to, wash your truck/vehicle, take a shower, disinfect possible contact points, appropriate down time before visiting avian clients etc.

Please be reminded that, Avian Influenza is a reportable disease under the Health of Animals Act. If you or your clients suspect Avian Influenza, please contact CFIA.

For more information about Avian Influenza, please visit the following website of CFIA:

https://inspection.canada.ca/animal-health/terrestrial-animals/diseases/reportable/avian-influenza/eng/1323990856863/1323991018946

Producers should call their private veterinarians first. If the vet believes that there is a risk of NAI (Notifiable Avian Influenza), they can call the sick bird line. CFIA-ACIA AB EOC Surveillance (403) 338-5225 or email cfia.ABSickBird-Lesoiseauxmalades@inspection.gc.ca.

Avian Influenza sample collection protocol is available in the following document: Avian Influenza Sample Collection Protocol

Shipping Samples to PDS:

  1. Avian samples should be packaged in a separate shipping package from all other samples (i.e. if you are sending bovine and avian samples please ship in 2 parcels).
  2. Multiple birds from the same farm can be packed in the same package.
  3. Place a copy of the submission form in a envelope on the outside of the package. This allows PDS staff to identify the shipment as avian prior to opening the parcel.
