Dr. Maodong Zhang - maodong.zhang@pds.usask.ca

Dr. Maodong Zhang joined PDS as a veterinary diagnostician in September 2020. Dr. Zhang he has a strong background in pathology, virology, molecular biology and metagenomic sequencing.

He received his DVM in Shandong Agricultural University and obtained his Master degree (MSc) in Northwest A & F University of China, mainly focused on receptor identification and characterization for Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV).

In 2015, he joined VIDO-InterVac as a PhD student to continue research on interaction between PRRSV structural proteins and host cells. After two years, he moved to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, WCVM to pursue a combined PhD and anatomic pathology training. His research was to explore the application of High Throughput Sequencing, including Illumina MiSeq and Oxford Nanopore sequencing, on viromes of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in western Canada, which identified several unconventional viruses associated with BRD and a few viruses first reported in Canada.

Dr. Zhang enjoys challenges in a diagnostic setting of broad knowledge to solve problems. Maodong can be contacted via e-mail: maodong.zhang@usask.ca.
